As I had finished the huge scroll seen previously for my Knight and Pennsic, I offered to take an assignment for the upcoming Battle of the Bay. I was excited and honored to be selected to do the Award of Arms for a friend of mine from a nearby Shire! I wanted it to be special, and I wanted her arms to really pop... she's later period German so I did not want to just do another Codex Manesse. In my searches for manuscripts that might be used in the period and location I wanted, I came across this: Book of Hours, Use of Rome (the 'Golf Book') c 1540. Bruges. In period it was done on parchment or velum with period pigments, most likely using an egg glair and with shell gold. The ink was likely iron gall ink.
I used pergamenta for my substrate, then used a modern ink I doctored. After that was done, I used gouache to paint in the colors, and finetec gold for the high lights on the brown elements. In progress and detail pics below.
