Last year, my Knight, Duke Logan, approached me about doing the scroll for the Known World Squires' Tournament that he holds every year at Pennsic. With some trepidation I accepted and started planning what I wanted to do... what materials I would need... It being the 50th anniversary of the Society for Creative Anachronism and the 45th anniversary of Pennsic... I wanted it to be special. Having discovered a love for the look of the Black Hours and with some encouragement from Baroness Aine, I began the layout. It was signed by 47 Knights and fought for by 52 squires and thanks to Uilleam of Clan Friseal, it was also in Thursday's Pennsic Independant! The final dimensions were 2 foot by 3 foot. The substrate was Arches black cover paper. The lettering and all the metallic bits were Finetec metallic paints, the rest was gouache. Each shield is only about 2 inches tall and represent the 20 Kingdoms of The Known World. Knights were asked to sign in by the Kingdom they started in, received their belt in, or currently resided in.
I drew inspiration from three sources: the leaves and vine work were from Duc du Barrie's Belle Heures; the Black Hours; and the drop shadows of the Isabella of Castille Breviary. Following are a huge series of in progress pics I was asked for! (By the way.... the metallics make it reallllly hard for the camera to focus... and I have been told that the pictures do not live up to the scroll in person.. )
