So this year, I received assignments for two Baronial level awards from Her Excellency, and one Kingdom level from the Clerk Signet! The first was a Silver Bow for Alfdis. This is a Baronial award for archery, and she has a Viking persona. Since I didn't have the tools (though it was tempting to figure out) I had to use the traditional materials of a scribe to recreate a Viking Runestone such as dot the western parts of Europe. On Bristol board, with gouache, I tried to capture the look of stone, then "carved" the letters with three shades of red paint to get the highlights and lowlights. Next was a Silver Glove for Toshi. This is the Baronial award for Rapier, and as his persona is Japanese I wanted to match it to him. I went with something a little more simple, the historical court documents which have the kanji and chops (signature seals) as well as the badge of the award. However, I forgot to get the picture after I added the chops. I apologize. This was done on Pergamenta with gouache and ink. The final assignment was issued the Wednesday before the event. I wanted to make it as special as I could so to match Lord Ghijskijn's persona, I went with a book from the same region, The Hours of Catherine of Cleaves. For his opal, I used Pergamenta as my substrate, laid 23k gold leaf, then did the calligraphy. After that I filled in the images with period pigments including vermillion and lead white. Unfortunately I failed to realize I had not gotten the final pictures after I entered all the details.... but these are right before I added the black and white work to the images..The large one is with all the details, but was taken with a cell phone instead of the good camera...
