I was given two assignments for this event that I was unfortunately not able to go to as we had a demo the same day. However, the scrolls were delivered and handed out during court! This was a Sea Dragon (Atlantian Rapier Award). Done for Lord Allen of Wolfhou. I wanted to try to capture his vibrant personality and picked a couple pages from the Macclesfield Psalter to get the right imagery. He does both archery and rapier. Using a piece of pergamenta under 8" x 10" I drew the images, then added the calligraphy. My script was also from the manuscript and that is also why there are still pencil lines on the text block. Next I used a finetec gold for the gilding and applied the base colors. The blue, red, white, and black are gouache, but the green, orangey red and pinkish red are all from period pigments I mixed myself. The red on the leaves is vermillion (toxic) and the orange is minium (also toxic). This one was for my friend, Lady Xixiliya of Macau. She is so friendly and so willing to help. I wanted this one to be special and just for her. (Yes, there's an inside joke to this one that I'm not telling anyone... she already knows..)
Also done on pergamenta, but larger.. close to 11" x 9" I think? I used all gouache for the koi and a pixma brush pen for the Hanzi. I had to use a translator, so I'm hoping it doesn't say anything bad...
