Recently, Master Tristan approached me about the possibility of me doing some calligraphy for him occasionally. I was flattered, and then terrified and flattered when he approached me about doing the calligraphy for a Pelican Scroll that was being given to the Principal of the Pearl, an order I was recently inducted into. He showed me the exemplar, gave me the text that was to be used, and I set off to practice. The scroll was based on a 1457 manuscript from King Rene d'Anjou, known as Le Livre du Cuer d'amours espris (The Book of the Love-Smitten Heart). Once Master Tristan was finished, he sent it to me for the calligraphy. Below is the exemplar. I was able to find about 16 pages digitally scanned on the internet and proceeded to study them to find the hand that it was written in. Not only were the letters a mix of what appeared to be three different styles, it also seemed as if three different scribes had written it. There were letters that were clearly Batarde, some were clearly a Secretary hand I had used in a previous project or two, and still others seemed to be Fraktur. The scroll was done on a piece of parchment, I used a doctored modern ink and pen to put the words on. Close-ups of the calligraphy.
