I was honored to be asked to do Opals for both a father and a daughter who are dedicated to the Dream and help to make it possible for all of us to live it. Opal for JohnThe exemplar I used for his, due to the distinct English, roughly 14th century, name he has, was the Luttrell Psalter. Including his arms was a bit tricky as the shield was perhaps 1 1/2 centimeters across? I used Windsor Newton and M.Graham gouaches with a mixture of Windsor Newton and Grumbacher brushes on the Pergamenta substrate. The gold was finetec. The same exemplar was used for the calligraphy (Gothic quadrata prescisus) , which I did with Higgins ink. In the original, velum or parchment was used with period pigments, possibly with a glair binder instead of gum arabic like modern paints, the gold would have been leaf and the ink would have been iron gall ink. In progress and detail shots below. Opal for WinifredHer name was more Welsh, so I looked for a Welsh Psalter or Book of Hours and found Llyfr Oriau Llanbeblig (ca. 1390-1400) which had ties to Caernarfon Castle in Wales.
Hers was also done on Pergamenta with 23k leaf gold using a gesso size to hold the gold to the substrate. The paints were Windsor Newton and M. Graham gouache. I used a Higgins ink mixture that I mix up for the Pointed quadrata minuscule hand that was used in the exemplar. For the capitols I used the Lombardic which were also used in the exemplar. In the original, the substrate would be vellum or parchment, with real gold and period pigments again most likely mixed with glair instead of gum. In progress and detail shots below
