A year, maybe two, ago, I had the privilege of doing her Silver Bow from our Barony. This year I was asked to create a scroll for her GoA for Archery, the Yew Bow. The original is the Book of Hours, Use of Sarum, aka The Taymouth Hours, folio f68. I did this one a bit larger than I have been doing of late, 11"x14" with the area of illumination and text being 8"x10".
Materials used: Perg, acrylic based gesso, 23k gold loose leaf, gouache, and Noodlers Bulletproof black. In progress and close ups below. (Again, bad memory card.)

In our Barony, the award for Arts and Sciences is the Silver Compass. I was honored to be selected to create this scroll for a friend and scribe, Collette de Paris. Based on her time period and location, I chose the Belle Heures of Duc du Berry. I happen to own a facsimile which I used to create her scroll. My recreation was done on perg, 8"x10" with a 1 1/2" to 2" border around.
The materials used were Gouache, finetec, and Noodler's Bulletproof black. Below are in progress and close ups. (Again, there were issues with the memory card) My third year of doing the scroll for the Known World Squires' Tourney at Pennsic. I made it a little smaller than the previous two. my inspiration this time was placards from a Staffordshire Hoard/Sutton Hoo/ Anglo Saxon style belt. The materials I used: Perg, finetec gold, gouache, and Noodler's Bulletproof Black ink.
In progress and some close up below. The wonderful woman I did this for is also a scribe. I'm always more nervous when I do scrolls for other scribes because I really want them to like it. One of my favorite manuscripts is one often called the London Rothschild Hours, or The Hours of Joanna I of Castile, from about 1500. I love all the pearls in it, the gems, the touches and flashes of gold. I selected folio 236r. The finished size was 8"x10" with at least a 1 1/2" border all round.
The materials I used were: Perg, gouache, finetec, and Higgins ink. The calligraphy was also pulled from the exemplar. Below are in progress and closeups. (Again, there was something wrong with the memory card in my camera). While I love to do scrolls for anyone and everyone, it's really fun to get to do one for someone you know. When I was asked to do the Kraken for Vinnie, I was picking through a lot of manuscripts, but nothing really spoke to me. Then I saw a picture of him and his lovely lady and decided to give pen and ink a go. I tried to style it after the manner of Albrect Durer, and matched a cadel and the batarde hand with it.
The final image was I believe was on an 8"x10" piece of perg with a 2" border all round for the final project. I used a crow quill nib for the illumination with Noodler's Bulletproof black ink, and finetec gold for the accents on the Kraken and the cadel. Sadly I don't believe I got any in progress images, just some closeups. (There was an issue with the memory card in my camera.) |
